Gornje podunavlje
This Special Nature Reserve comprises the Serbian portion of an international wetland wilderness that extends over the borders into neighbouring Croatia and Hungary...
The whole vast complex represents one of the finest birding and wildlife areas in Europe. It comprises oak, willow and poplar forest on alluvial soil with numerous seasonal pools. The forests are famed for their Wild Boar and Red Deer populations, and nearby fish ponds provide an additional attraction for waterfowl.
Birds include: Black Stork, Little Bittern, Greylag Goose, Red-crested Pochard, White-tailed Eagle, Honey Buzzard, Black Kite, Marsh Harrier, Saker Falcon, Black Woodpecker, Middle-spotted Woodpecker, Lesser-spotted Woodpecker, Yellow Wagtail, Collared Flycatcher, Red-backed Shrike, Savi's Warbler, River Warbler.
Spring Migration: This is one of the “Wellingtons Days”: April is the height of the annual Danube water level cycle and the forests will be partially flooded.Fortunately, forest canopies will not be as thick as they will be only a week or two later, so will be easier to spot the forest dwellers like Black Woodpeckers. Grey-headed Woodpecker can be heard, but it is not that easy to spot. Along our route, we will be visiting the adjoining Kolut and Svilojevo fishponds to experience our first Greylag Goose and Black Kite, among many others. With some luck, the fishponds should also produce Red-crested Pochard, while grasslands might reward us with our first Saker Falcon.
Breeding Season: This is one of the “Wellingtons Days”: in partially flooded forests, we will be searching for Black, Green and Middle Spotted Woodpeckers, Black Stork, Honey Buzzard, White-tailed Eagle, Black Kite and Collared Flycatcher. Grey-headed Woodpecker can be heard, but it is not that easy to spot. Along our route, we will be visiting the adjoining Kolut and Svilojevo fishponds to experience our first Savi’s Warbler, Common Pochard, Spotted Crake, Sand Martin, Whiskered Tern and Penduline Tit, among many others.
